The author James Baldwin was a talent in writing short stories for black Americans in the 1950s and 60s. His experience as a church minister in the past lead him to a spiritual acceptance of himself. He knew being black and a homosexual it was a taboo back in the date. The fact the author lived in a racist society it was even harder to became a recognize writer, but his talent proof that not even prejudice can darken his shine star.
I became fond of the Sonny's Blues story because I could relate myself with the protagonist and his brother. I also have a younger brother, but only five years apart, and like Sonny he went through a lot of issues after the loss of our dear mother. The part in the story that really touch me it was when his mom ask him to watch for Sonny's well being. I remembered my own mother before she pass asking me to watch and protect my younger brother. As the story evolved I could recognize that is not only coincidence between my own story and the events in this fiction, but that also love and hatred in a siblings relationship may walk together side by side in the same path of up's and down's in life. In the story Baldwin showed that anguish of Sonny's drug addition and troublesome relationship with his brother had new meaning at the end, and that Sonny's it was much more than a talented piano player, he was his brother whom he loved with all his virtues and faults.

Ana, I also could relate the story with me. We have had a similar problem in our families. Definitely this story shows one of so many stories about drugs that happen so often on today's days. This drug issue can happen with any type of person, it does not matter the race, color or economic situation. Love and God are beyond of every thing. That[s why we have to help and support any person that is relate (with or without blood) with us to try superate this problem that seems to consume a big part of the world.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the way you gave some background on the author that gives the reader a better sense of why the story was written. Personalizing your blog was also a nice touch and makes it easer for people to look and see how the story might relate to them. This technique makes it easer for me to analyze other people’s work. Having a relative that struggles with drugs helps me understand the narrators struggle to understand why and how did the addiction begin. I feel that people build character by supporting a family member who is having problems and doesn’t appreciate the effort you make, but at the same time coming to an understanding that they are different. I think that is the realization that Sonny and his brother come to at the end of the story. Thank you I enjoyed your blog.
